+Today my mother, stepmother, and I spent *lots* of time in trains. We first took the Amtrak down to Washington DC, a multi-hour trip in and of itself, before traversing the city on the Metro. The stations are so funny looking. They look like they're built with concrete bathtubs!
+

+We then arrived at the hotel - and *what* a hotel the [Waldorf Astoria](https://www.hilton.com/en/hotels/dcawawa-waldorf-astoria-washington-dc/) is! It is built of huge blocks of stone and has a clock tower out the top. There's a central courtyard almost like a Gaylord and the rooms are full of gold and crystals. It feels larger than life. Some people drive up to it in Maserati or Bentley and most other occupants are in business attire. Our room has two chandeliers! It feels quite pompous. We're staying at the Waldorf because Mother has a voucher for a free night in any hotel and wanted to splurge for my last night under her care.

+After dropping our bags off at the hotel, we took the train down to the [O Museum](https://www.omuseum.org/visit), an eclectic collection of signed guitars, original Muppets, and secret, themed rooms. It was, honestly, a bit overwhelming - the themed areas had conflicting soundtracks, detracting from the charm. We got bubble tea afterwards. Mine was mango.
+
+Upon our return to the hotel room, I spent some time with Anki. I ended up studying 1000 flashcards over the course of 2 hours and 24 minutes, more than any other singular day since I started studying vocabulary a month ago! I guess that makes up for the measly 44 cards studied yesterday... I was tired, okay!?
+
+For dinner, we went to [Ambar](https://ambarrestaurant.com/), a restaurant serving all-you-can-eat Balkan tapas. It was pretty good - their pesto was excellent and their tomato soup was on point. It is, however, a shame that all-you-can-eat restaurants charge the same rates whether or not you eat the more expensive items (like meat). Anyway, I digress - the food was great!

+After dinner, we wandered past the White House to the National Mall. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

+Today, after a luxurious, sleeping-in kind of morning, we headed up the [old post office clock tower](https://www.nps.gov/nama/planyourvisit/opot.htm) to see the view of the city.
+

+After soaking that up, we made a beeline for the [Smithsonian Air and Space Museum](https://airandspace.si.edu/visit/museum-dc) to burn the midday. Even just after opening, the line was out the door! It was worth it, though. To see a real Rocketdyne F-1 engine, nuclear ballistic missiles, and an adorable slide rule, the museum was perfect as always.

+Then came the hard part. We took the train to the [Washington Dulles Hilton](https://www.hilton.com/en/hotels/iadahhf-hilton-washington-dulles-airport/) for dropoff. It's easy to hypothetically say goodbye for 11 months to someone you love, but it's a lot harder to do it for real. I sat outside for the next hour to enjoy the tranquil sounds of nature and construction to cool my nerves. until dinner
+
+Back inside, I met my roommate and rendezvoused with the other program members for dinner and a few hours of presentations. Dinner was fine - veggie lo mein with rice - and we learned a lot at the presentations. Alumni and a former German host family spoke about what the experience would be like, what some key cultural differences might be, and what the agenda for the next couple of days will be. Tomorrow, we have a meeting with the Department of State fresh in the morning, after which we head to Capitol Hill to meet with congressional staffers.
+
+In the meantime, I am just 3 days away from finishing the [Goethe Institute A1 Wordlist](https://github.com/patsytau/anki_german_a1_vocab)! I'll have to start [the A2 list](https://github.com/codersasank/ankideck-german-a2-wordlist) next. I'll start writing this blog in German once I am in Germany on the 10th - albiet with a heavy reliance on a *woerterbuch*.

+Hotel breakfasts are bad, even if they are presented in a conference-like setting like this one. The tea, however, is a lifesaver; Lipton isn't great, for sure, but it has caffeine and doesn't taste like dirt! After breakfast, the people in charge of the CBYX program from the U.S. Department of State talked with us about the importance of this program and to reiterate how impactful this will be for us. When I say 'us,' I mean not only my crew (of 42 people under the care of AFS) but also the other crew (about 80 people under the care of CIEE).
+
+The coach bus ride to Capitol Hill was uneventful; I napped. It's hard to find time to sleep when curfew is at 22:00, at which point I still need to do my vocabulary study and write this ~~annoying~~ wonderful blog post.
+
+Anyway, Capitol Hill was beautiful, as usual.

+Us three [Pennsylvania Fifth Congressional District](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania%27s_5th_congressional_district) folk decided to first visit our representative, [Mary Gay Scanlon](https://scanlon.house.gov/). She had pride flags outside her office, which was good to see! When we walked in, her secretary was reassuring a constituent that "When there is a motion to impeach him, she will publicly express her support for it. She supports any effort to stop the terrible things happening right now." That was nice to hear! I feel represented!

+Once the secretary got off her call, we were told that "unfortunately, her education staffer isn't in today," and got handed a business card. Surprisingly painless.
+
+Our next meeting was with Senator [David McCormick](https://www.mccormick.senate.gov/). Unlike the representative meeting, which was a walk-in, this meeting had been scheduled ahead of time. Barely. McCormick has potentially the *least* responsive office I have ever had the displeasure of interacting with. To schedule the meeting, I filled out the [form](https://www.mccormick.senate.gov/services/scheduling/) on their website, as one does. After a week of no response, I built up the courage to call his office - only to be told that the form *doesn't work* and to email an address that *doesn't exist*. Pardon, *what?* It seems to me that it should be easy to reach one's elected officials; I was frustrated. In the end, one of the adults at CBYX got involved and scheduled the meeting for us.
+
+The meeting. How did the meeting go, one might ask. It went well, all things considered. Upon entering the room, which, by the way, was on the seventh floor of one of the *coolest* office buildings I have ever seen, we got greeted by his secretary, who notified the staffer as to our presence. While waiting, I absorbed the room I was in.
+
+On one wall was a large American flag from the Civil War. It had 13 stars to 'remind us of what we were fighting for.' On the other walls were a number of small (maybe 10"x10") framed photos of McCormick with a variety of figures, including Donald Trump, a dairy farmer, Donald Trump, a police officer, Donald Trump, Serena Williams, and Donald Trump. I swear, there were more pictures of Trump on that wall than of McCormick!
+
+I digress. The meeting was akward, brief, and effective. After a series of weak handshakes, we filed into a meeting room with gaudy blue carpeting ("picked out by his wife") and chairs like the ones in Congress. The staffer was quite receptive. He assured us that "what [we] are doing is incredible" and that McCormick was "supportive of [the program's] goals." When Senator Fetterman came up in conversation, the staffer assured us that McCormick was "on good terms" with Fetterman and that the two "worked closely together." That was good to hear. We said tschuess and left, confident that we did well.

+We then walked a couple of office buildings over to visit Senator [John Fetterman](https://www.fetterman.senate.gov/). He also had pride flags outside of his office, right next to the board of hostages still being held by Hamas. Fun. His secretaries greeted us cordially, though the education staffers were not in. They invited us to help ourselves to a variety of Pennsylvania-made products lined up on shelves on the wall, including chocolates, unfrosted Pop-Tarts, and little boxes of Raisin Bran. I can't get over how chill Fetterman is. What other Senator gives away free food, free *junk* food nonetheless, in their office? (Don't answer that)

+At this point it was nearing 13:30 and we were all starving. For lunch, we headed over to the Union Station Shake Shack, where I got fries and a chocolate shake. At this point, we had a group of about 10 people, all from Pennsylvania (there are 13 PA folks in total). As lunch hour dwindled to an end, some of us had meetings and others wanted to shop. 2 of my peers and I decided to take the 25 minute walk down to the [National Natural History Museum](https://naturalhistory.si.edu/), where we spent an hour just wandering aimlessly. We saw gems, minerals, sea animals, and all sorts of fossils. We made it back just in time for an AFS-CBYX group photo on the steps of the Capitol building.
+
+The bus ride home was as uneventful as the one there; I napped. Being a lobbyist must be exhausting.
+
+After my dinner of salad and a brief bias-awareness instructional session, one of my peers and I went out to the courtyard to chill. The sound of the crickets and cicadas there is beautiful! There was an eccentric woman crocheting alone at a table to the side. She asked if we minded if she smoked (weed); we didn't. When we mentioned crocheting, she spent the next 15 minutes telling us all about how much she loves to crochet and showing us various works she's finished recently. She was on the cover of a British crochet magazine and her patterns are widely published in others! She explained to me the pattern she was currently working on; make the sleeve and top portion of a sweater or shawl using a grid-like "double crochet and chain one" pattern before going around and around the body with a 'chain 5' scallop-lookign design. I'm going to try to make it; crochet is fun!

+Es ist drei und zwanzig uhr sechzehn. Ich bin ueber das Meer und ich kann nicht schlafen - dies ist ein problem, denn heute ich habe nur drei Stunde in der Flughafen vor ein oder Abflug. Dies Anschluss ist sehr lang, aber nicht so lang zu schlaffen.

+Es tut mir leid, es gibt fehler mit mein Grammatik. Es ist denn ich muss lerne der Grammatik - jetzt, ich lerne nur die Woerten!
+
+Weh tun mein Bein, denn ich Stande nicht seit vier oder mehr Stunden. Ich moechte Standen, aber die Menschen in der links und rechts schlaft. Ich kenne nicht wie - es gibt zu laut fuer mich!

+Heute, vor ein lecker Früstück, wir gehen nach Schule. Es ist in Hamburg, danebe ein Cafe und das wasser - Gibt eine 'locks' es in das wasser, und die brücken sind viel.
+
+In die Schule, wir sprachen Deutsch, lernen die Grammatik (ein bisschen; nicht zu viel. Ich frage für ein buch von Grammatik.), und sprachen mehr Deutsch. Ich bin in ein Unterricht mit fünf oder sechs oder menschen, und die Klasse ist 'CEFR A-1.2.' Nicht zu schwer - ich bin die dritte oder zweitte gut in die klasse mit mein Deutsch sehr schlecht!
+
+Die Klasse habt zwei neunzig-minuten teil mit eine Pausse für fünfzehn minuten in die mitte. (Ich muss lerne mein 'cases' aber die Frau möchte keine Grammatick in seine Klasse.) Wir haben Klasse jede Wochentag und gehen mit U1, U3, und zwei Bus.
+
+Dann, wir essen in das Essenplatz. Ich esse falafel mit Reis und chutney. Es lecker ist!
+
+In der Nachmittag, wir spielen 'pool' mit eine Gruppe von grundschüleren. Ein sind neun Jahre alt, und ein sind zwölf. Sie gewinnt. Zwei zeit! Aber alles gut. Ich gehe ins ein laden. Möchte 'nail polish remover' holen, aber ich nicht sehen das!
+
+Das Zimmer ist Brot mit Käse, Butter, und Apfelsaft. Oder, mehr richtig, Apfelschorle mit Mineralwasser. Nach zimmer, wir reden in klein Gruppe um unster Tag und unster Gefühl. Es ist eine grosse Hilfe! Ich, Herr Johann, und zwei Freunden sprachen seit ein hundert minuten!

+Ich muss machen eine Bild morgen, aber es ist null uhr acht, so ich muss schlafen.

+Ich schreibe in den Morgen später, weil ich bis eins Uhr vierzig aufgestehen mit Johann und zwei Freunden habe. Ich bin müde. Jede tag, wir um sechs Uhr fünf und vierzig aufstehen. Aber es ist gut - Mein Vocabular A1 ist fertig, und jetzt ich besseren meine Grammatick. Gestern, habe ich der Accusativ, der Dativ, der Genetiv, und der Nominativ gelernt.
+
+Ich habe also nein eins aber zwei Zeit auf Deutsch gebestellen! Ich habe ein Franzbrötchen und der Nagellackentferner gekaufen. Ich habe auch nach ein Geld Automat für der Bargeld gehen.
+
+Ich habe nicht zu viel Zeit, aber es ist genug. Heute, ich werde das Bild machen (noch Tag, ich kenne...) und ich auch werde mehr Grammatik lernen.

+Ich habe ein Magpie geseht! Merh richtig, ich zwei Magpie geseht!
+
+Ander tag, ander Früstück von Brot, Käse, Butter, und Apfelsaft.
+
+Wir sind nach der Stellehalte gegangen. Wenn wir war da, wir hat das Bus bis die U-Bahn 1 genommen. Wir haben die U1 und die U3 genommen. Denn, wir haben unter eine Brücke getanzt und gesingen. Jede Tag, wir tanzen und singen Leide schlecht - aber es ist lüstig! Wir müssen vor Menschen die Ding schlechten sein können. Oder, nicht so schlecht; Tingen unangenehmen.
+
+In die Pause von Spracheschule, ich habe einen Franzbrötchen, in nur zwei minuten, bestellt und gegessen. Es ist der zweitte tage von viel; ich *liebe* die Franzbrötchen! Es ist ein Criossant mit Cinnamon und Zucker.
+
+Wir hat für Abendessen gegrillen. Ich habe ein 'burger mit Sauerkraut und Salat der Kartoffeln gegessen. Wir (fünf Freund\*innen mit mir) sind in dem Park gegangen. Die Park ist sehr lüstig! Meinen Freund\*innen hier sind sehr nett, gleich wie meinen Freund\*innen zum Heimat <3 .

+Morgen, bin ich später als am gestern aufgestehen. Ich habe um sieben Uhr aufgestehen! Aber ich habe nicht die Stunden den Schlafen dass ich brauche. Heute nacht, ich werde vor drei und zwanzig Uhr schlafen. Mit der später Aufstehenstunde morgen, ich glaube dass am acht Uhr ist, morgen werde ich unmüde sein! Wenn man unmüde ist, man kann lernen besser als wenn man ist nicht geschlafen. Aber, ich schreibe über einer anderen Thema. Enschuldigung!
+
+Im klasse, wir ein Buch, dass für mich N+1 ist, gelernt. Ich kenne nicht par Vocabeln, aber verstehe gut. Wann finde ich ein neues Wort, ich schreibe das in meinen Buch für später. Jetzt, lese ich das Buch und aus das mache Karten des Anki. Ich glaube dass mein Lieblingswort von heute 'Angeber' ist; es bedeutet 'show-off' auf Englisch.
+
+Am mittag, nehmen wir die Bahn zu dem Essenplatz für die letzte Zeit zusammen. Das Essenplatz ist sehr lecker, aber nehmt so viel Zeit dass ich für lernen lieber benutzen.
+
+Morgen, wir werden im Hostel frühstücken, mittagessen, und abendessen; haben kein Unterricht. Ich werde meine Kleidung machen und nach Hamburg mit meine Freund\*innen gehen. Ich will ins Papierladen gehen. Danach, möchte, dass bis Montag die Akkusativ, Dativ, und Genitiv werde gelernt haben. Ich möchte auch, dass bis Montag die Perfekt Futur ('will have verbed'), Präteritum ('verbed') werde gelernt haben. (Dieses sätzen sind in der Perfekt Futur!)
+
+Zurück nach heute. Im nachmittag, habe ich bei Edeka gegangen. Meine Lehrerin hat heute sagt dass es '*bei* Edeka', aber '*zu* andere Laden', ist. Ich habe zu viel gelernt!
+
+Für Abendessen, ich habe bisschen Suppe der Tomaten gegessen mit einem lecker Salat. Danach, habe ich Deutsch gelernt und Billiard gespielen währen die andere Menschen haben einen Film gesehen.
+

+Am morgen, habe ich noch einmal Brot mit Butter und Marmelade gefrühstückt. Ich lerne nichts heute, weil Spracheschule am Wochenende nicht ist, und ich habe keine Freizeit ohne Freunden gehaben. Ich muss meine Partizip lernen...
+
+Wir sind nach Farmsen gegangen, weil haben unseren Kleidung gemacht. Wir haben Bretzel und Getränken aus eine Bäckerei und einen Euro-Laden bestellt. Danach, wir sind zurück zu das Hostel gegangen.
+
+Am mittag, habe ich Reis mit Curry gemittagesst. Das essen ist in unsere Hostel mehr mild als aus Haus, aber es ist noch lecker. Ich mag die käse hier! Sie haben Käse mit Paprika; meine neue Lieblingskäse.
+
+Am nachmittag, bin ich, mit fünf Freunden, nach Hambur-Mitte gegangen. Da, wir sind ins die Mall gegangen. Ich habe zwei Füller und braun Tinte gekaufen. Meine Freunden haben eine Buchs gekaufen, aber ich habe nicht das machen, weil ich eine Buchs schon habe.

+Am abend, habe ich seit drei Stunden geschlaft. Es ist null Uhr und ich bin müde.

+Ich werde die Grammatik lernen... *nach* ich habe mein Blog geschrieben. Wiel das, meine Grammatik in diese Nachrichte ist schlechte. Am morgen, werde ich vielleicht eine besser Nachrichte schreiben, aber für gleich, man musst ok mit meinem Grammatik sein.
+
+Am morgen, ich habe so viel gefrühstücken. Ich habe drei Franzbrötchen mit Nutella und Marmelade genehmt. Während wir haben gefrühstücken, wir haben über unsere Tag, unsere Nacht, und unsere Frühstück sich gesprechen. Wir woll in ein Boot über die Elbe gehen, vor nach das Miniatur Wunderland gehen. Und alle das war richtig.
+
+Wir sind zu das Wasser auf den U-Bahn gegangen. Wir haben gleich Bahnen genehmt als im morgen zu Spracheschule nehmen! Ich liebe die Bahn hier in Hamburg.
+

+Danach, wir haben Gruppen gemacht und sind nach Essen gegangen. Meine gruppe haben Dö̈nner gegessen, aber ich und eine Freundin haben Ramen gegessen. Ich glaube dass die Ramen in USA besser als in Deutschland ist. Und das hat auch dreizehn Euro neunzig kostet! Danach, wir haben sitzen im Park und das Eis kaufen gemacht.

+Im Museum, haben wir wiele kleine Bahnen gesehen. Aber das Museum war zu laut und voll für mich!

+Für Abendessen, ich habe Ravioli, Kartoffeln, und Gemüsen gegessen. Es war sehr lecker! Ich mag das Essen hier in Deutschland.

+Heute, ein Montag, bin ich zu Sprachschule gegangen. Heute war die erste Zeit, wir sind alein gegangen! Wor Schule, bin ich bei Edeka gegangen und habe Butterkeks gekaufen. Butterkeks sind so lecker! Im Pause, bin ich zu dem Sandwichladen unter dem Bahnhof gegangen. Ich habe vier Euro fünfzig gezahlen! Aber, kenne ich dass das Preis des Sandwich hocher in USA als in Deutschland ist. Der Sandwichman hat meine Lieblingssandwich, dass hat Tomaten und Käse und Salat.

+Nach Schule, war ich mit einen Freundinnen zum Waschensalon. Wir haben Mittagessen in der Mall gekaufen. Füller sind billiger heir als in USA, aber habe ich kein füller gekaufen, weil ich genug neun habe!
+
+Ich habe nach unser AFS-Klasse für zwei Stunden geschlaft, weil die Klasse sehr lange und langweilig war. Gestern, habe ich schlafen mehr möchten, aber war in ein Gespräche interessat bis eins Uhr... Ich muss jetzt schlafen.
